When The Palace at Coral Gables residents Reva and Gerald Stein learned their first grandchild, Elissa Chakoff, was getting married on Friday, November 13, they were distraught knowing they could not attend due to COVID-19.

Wanting to say thank you to first responders at the Broward County Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department in Weston, The Palace at Weston’s team delivered 50 delectable, hand-crafted box lunches prepared by chefs from The Palace Senior Living Communities.

Gerald and Reva Stein weren’t going to let a pandemic stand in the way of attending their first granddaughter’s wedding. With the help of the Social Team at The Palace Coral Gables, they had a front row seat for the celebration. Decked out in “Grandma and Grandpa of the Bride” matching T-shirt’s and sporting a matching corsage and boutinieere, the couple watched on the community’s big screen as their granddaughter Elissa said her “I do’s”. After the ceremony, Gerald and Reva enjoyed champagne and wedding cake. But the real surprise came later in the day when Elissa and new husband Danny visited her grandparents in their wedding attire. As Gerald, Reva and Palace staff showered the pair with rice, cameras from local news outlets captured the event for the evening news.

In 2018, Swiss documentary filmmaker Beat Oswald premiered his film, “Kingdom,” featuring residents of The Palace Coral Gables. Now renamed “Golden Age,” the documentary illustrates how U.S. seniors live in their later years. The Palace’s unique lifestyle with non-stop entertainment, glamour and fun are showcased along with firsthand interviews with The Palace’s founders Helen and Jacob Shaham. Residents and staff all poignantly discuss the challenges of aging. Living at the community while filming gave Oswald special insights into the community’s lifestyle. His film was celebrated at many film festivals, and can now be watched for free with an Amazon Prime subscription through Amazon Prime Video. There is a small fee for non-subscribers.

Despite these uncertain times when visitors are restricted from assisted living and memory care communities, residents at The Palace Gardens in Homestead are enjoying being connected with their loved ones.

MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Life at The Palace Coral Gables was designed to be grand, for active senior citizens. Pamela Parker is the Social Director. She describes the pre-coronavirus atmosphere as jovial. “We are used to having big parties every month, we are used to having morning to night activities, dinners with our friends. In an instant that all changed.” In order to prevent the spread of coronavirus, group activities and cherished time with family needed to be altered.

As the corona virus pandemic continues to restrict visits by families and friends to Senior Living Communities and limit residents’ ability to venture out, there are older people making use of these unprecedented times and finding fulfillment.
