Global life expectancy is on the rise. But while people are living longer, they’re not necessarily living in good health, which has a high cost for society. Now, one foundation is offering a $101 million funding prize to any team of scientists able to develop a treatment that can restore a senior’s vitality for at least a decade.

This is a story about a 43-year friendship surviving amid turbulent times. After a dozen years at the helm, Rick Hirsch retired as Miami Herald managing editor in December 2021, but he did not relinquish his concern for a talented former colleague: Edna Buchanan, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and multi-book author. Decades ago, when Hirsch was a reporter, his newsroom desk was behind that of the woman he today calls “a legend.”

In the heart of The Palace Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, an oasis has blossomed under the watchful care of resident Felipe Colon, a former landscape artist. His green thumb, honed over a lifetime, has found a new canvas within the community, creating a haven of beauty and tranquility.

It has taken the better part of two years to make it happen, but at long last the Salvadore Park has a large dog run. Vice Mayor Rhonda Anderson, who personally drove the project forward, led the ribbon cutting on the first Saturday of September. Joining the vice mayor were Mayor Vince Lago, Commissioners Ariel Fernandez and Melissa Castro, and Community Recreation Department Director Fred Couceyro.

This year’s annual Best Workplaces in Aging Services List from Fortune again includes some familiar faces — and a few newcomers to the list.The annual list, released Wednesday, catalogs the top aging services workplaces nationwide and differentiates between large and small- to-medium-sized operators and care providers.

This is the first time The Palace Group has achieved top honors and the third time The Palace Group joined the prestigious list of the top twenty-five leading senior housing companies in the country. Earning this spot means The Palace Group is one of the best companies to work for in the country in the Senior Living Industry.

Snippets of discussion about a recent lecture on ChatGPT emerge while a debate about medical marijuana continues a few tables over.

It’s not every day someone turns 100! When it’s done with exuberance & grace, it’s even more special. Palace at Coral Gables resident Elena De Volloldo celebrated the Big 100 and the Palace Entertainment Team went “all out” to make her day extraordinary. The day began with Mojitos, served to a Salsa beat by our Entertainment Team dressed in their Salsa best. Elena and her friends boarded a decorated Cuban-themed bus for a surprise tour. Our party girl dreams of her birthplace in Havana in 1923 and longs for a taste of Old Havana, so we whisked her and her friends on a tour of Calle Ocho with stops at Domino Park and the Cuban Memorial. Then, on to the world’s most famous Cuban restaurant, Versailles, where the management and staff serenaded her with their version of Happy Birthday and all enjoyed a round of Coladas. As curious patrons watched the festivities, our celebrants enjoyed an impromptu Salsa Dance Party in the parking lot before heading on to a fabulous luncheon given by Elena’s loving children. Happy Birthday Elena!
